There exists a psychological phenomenon in which perfectly sane people, with no desire to die, find themselves faced with a steep cliff and experience a strong desire to leap. To jump from their safe vantage point into the unknown. This phenomenon is so common in fact, that the french have a term for it: L’appel du Vide – Call of the Void.

It’s All Happening

Confession: I’ve been keeping a secret from you all. A pretty big one. Well, big in the world of travel blogging which probably makes it not that big at all. But, the time has come to reveal my secret. (Warning: This post contains a lot of somewhat bizzare and only tangentally related multi-media) You might want to grab a seat. Because I’m coming out. I want the world to know. And because I wanted an excuse to include a video of this song. And yes, I know I could have included the orginal but then I remembered this semi-awkward gem … Read More

Capture the Color Photos

I don’t normally take part in blogger competitions but I saw this one and it really caught my eye. Mainly because it gave me an excuse to go through and look at photos from my trips. TravelSupermarket has put together the Capture the Colour contest, which asks travel bloggers to pick out their best photo which shows off one of five colors: blue, red, yellow, green, and/or white. The judges are all other travel bloggers: Dan of Canvas of Light, Abi of Inside the Travel Lab, Dave and Deb of The Planet D, Christine of Almost Fearless, and Ken Kaminesky. Anyway here are … Read More

Blog Stats

As I mentioned in my April Summary, I am going to start adding a new to my monthly updates. I get a lot of questions about my blog stats and how much money I am spending or earning by running a travel blog. This post will get you up to speed with how things have been going until this point, and then from now on I’ll give monthly updates with each summary. I don’t know that a lot of my readers are looking to start their own blog, but hopefully if anyone is, this will help you give you some thoughts on the process. … Read More

Updated Layout

As you may have noticed, my site has recently undergone another layout update. The main changes are the brand new header and “connect” buttons on the right sidebar. I’m still not 100% thrilled with everything so you will probably see some small changes over the next couple of weeks but hopefully this is a step in the right direction. If you like me on facebook you may have also noticed an update there as well! So what do you think? Better? Worse? Too busy? Give me your thoughts!
New Blog Feature: Misadventure Mondays

I am very excited to announce a new blog feature that I will be rolling out starting next week: Misadventure Mondays. In this segment I will invite some of my favorite travel bloggers to share their stories of trips gone bad. Getting robbed on the streets of foreign cities, suffering a bout of food poisoning in a hostel bathroom, loosing their passport on an overnight bus. Real people. Real trips. Real stories. You’ll find out what they learned so hopefully you won’t have to. I’ve got a lot of great bloggers lined up that I will be featuring in the coming weeks. So … Read More

What’s in a Name? Vote Now!

Photo credit: Flickr (Creative Commons) So I’ve had a couple of suggestions that I change the name of my blog to something a little easier to remember. I’ve also heard that the mismatch between my domain name (Traveling Liz) and my blog name (L’appel Du Vide) is confusing. So, while I really like my blog name, I am now considering changing it to the simple “Traveling Liz.” But – before I make that update I thought I would ask my readers what they thought. To that end, I have set up a poll on the right side bar to … Read More

New Blog Layout

As you may have noticed, I now have a brand new layout for the blog! I switched to Word Press which seems to function a lot better than blogger and also changed the colors to hopefully make everything a little easier to read. So, please tell me what you think of the changes. Let me know if you have any issues with broken links, bad navigation, etc. I would love to get your feedback!

ABC, easy as 123

Audrey from That Backpacker recently tagged me to take part in the ABCs of Travel. I know its cheesy like a chain letter (or as Chester the Cheetah would say, it’s dangerously cheesy) but I thought it would be a fun way to recap some of my travel experiences so what the hey. A: Age you went on your first international trip: When I was 16, I went to Paris on a school trip to study Art History. I remember being in such awe at everything that I was literally gawking at the Charles De Gaulle airport before we had even … Read More

L’appel du Vide
There exists a psychological phenomenon in which perfectly sane people, with no desire to die, find themselves faced with a steep cliff and experience a strong desire to leap. To jump from their safe vantage point into the unknown. This phenomenon is so common in fact, that the french have a term for it: L’appel du Vide – Call of the Void. Most people, thankfully, don’t jump. They stand, face to face with the precipice and inch forward bit by bit as far as they dare. They stretch out their arms, they lean forward, they let the great depth overwhelm … Read More
