The World’s Most Expensive Coffee

In Indonesia, we took ourselves out for a special little Christmas Eve treat – a cup of the world’s most expensive coffee. How expensive you may ask?

One cup of this world famous cup of coffee costs a whopping $10. (Haha, although that is ridiculous it’s kind of not that crazy compared to the prices at Starbucks).

So what makes this cup of joe so expensive? Well, Kopi Luwak, as the coffee is called is one of the rarest cups of Java in the world due to its very specialized production.

You see these coffee beans are special. They have been collected from the poop of a animal local to the Indonesian Islands. The luwak, a cat like animal, eats the coffee berries and poops out the indigestible beans. These beans are then collected by locals and made into coffee. I promise I didn’t make any of this up.

So from cat poop to golden tea cups, we get the world’s most expensive coffee.

As for the taste – I have to admit it was pretty good. One does have to wonder how this became a thing. Was some guy just sick of seeing all his carefully planted coffee going to waste as the Luwaks ate his supply each year? Just he just decide the beans still looked useable? Who knows.

The one thing I do know is that if you ever have the urge to drink cat excrement, Java is the place for you.

I saw a programme about this the other day which talked about the production and cost of what you tried. I’m glad it lived up to expectation – I’m not one for coffee, but I’d be tempted to give it a try if I ever make it there.

I love coffee, but catpoop coffee does not appeal. Probably because I don’t particularly like cats, and that mostly because their poop is so vile smelling..

I don’t know if your travels are taking you to Thailand, but if so, you’ll be able to compare catpoop coffee with elephantpoop coffee!

  3. I’ve heard about ‘poop’ coffee and its infamous priciness before, but I’ve never read a blog post about someone who has actually drank it! Very cool to hear that it actually is yummy in addition to the weird-out factor! Definitely will be on my list when I head to Indonesia. Great post!

  4. I like the way the coffee was served! Other than that, catpoop coffee? No, thanks…
