Misadventure Monday: Gary from “Everything Everywhere”

This post is part of a L’appel Du Vide feature, Misadventure Mondays. In each segment, I’ll ask one of my favorite travel bloggers to share one of their Travel Misadventures. This Monday, Gary from Everything Everywhere shares his story of a washed out Visa.

Tell me a little about yourself and your current trip?

I have been traveling around the world since March 2007. Since then, I’ve been to over 110 countries and territories around the world, all 50 US states and all 7 continents.

Describe your travel style?

It is really all over the place. I’ll sometimes stay in hostels and some times in luxury resorts. I’ll visit extremely remote places as well as large cities. I tend to get around. In 2012 alone I’ve visited 6 continents already.

What’s been your best/worst travel misadventure?

Tell me about where you were, who you were with, and what happened. My biggest misadventure was probably being denied entry into the nation of Kiribati in 2007 because my passport got wet and the ink on my Kiribati visa bled off the page. I ended up going to Fiji on a plane several hours later instead of visiting Kiribati.

What were the negative or positive outcomes of your misadventure?

I sent an email to the minister of tourism for Kiribati about my ordeal and a few months later Americans no longer needed a visa to enter Kiribati. I suppose that is a pretty positive outcome.

What did you learn from this misadventure that you can share with other travelers?

Keep your passport dry!

What’s the one other lesson  you’ve learned on your trip that you wish you had known before you left?

I wish I wasn’t so worried about packing and planning. The ability to adapt is more important than the ability to plan when traveling.

Thanks Gary for sharing!

Great to meet Gary here! I like the story about his wet passport in Kiribati. We need to send Gary (with a wet passport) to other countries too. So their ministers would cancel visa requirements for Americans ;)
