Oh the famous Blue Lagoon, Iceland. The most famous attraction of the tiny Iceland, it sees more visitors each year than the country’s entire population. A giant geothermal spa, the Blue Lagoon is known for its milky blue water, its steamy atmosphere and alien lava sculpted landscape.
I had my reservations about the Blue Lagoon – I worried that like so many of these lauded tourist attractions, the Blue Lagoon would let me down. But – It’s amazing. It seriously lived up to every expectation.
The Blue Lagoon is located very near Iceland’s international airport, making it the perfect place to stop on your way to or from Reykjavik. Holly and I’s rental car allowed us to stop by on our way back to DC on our last day in Iceland.
The Blue Lagoon provided us with the “Blue Lagoon Experience” which, in addition to entrance to the Blue Lagoon, includes towel and bath robe rental as well as a complimentary drink and facial treatment. Upon checking in, we were handed our towel and robe as well as several wrist bands that could be exchanged for our drinks and facial masks. We were also given an electronic bracelet which gave us access to the spa area and served as our locker key. I had heard a lot of warnings about the legendary Blue Lagoon locker room nudity, but it honestly it wasn’t anything to be concerned over. I wore my swimsuit under my clothes on the way in and showered in it before entering the lagoon. Afterwards it was easy to find a private place to quickly change. The Lagoon is seriously huge. Standing in it, you can’t even see the other side. Its really well designed to feel natural (even though its not) with rocky outcrops and wooden bridges. We spent a long time soaking in the water and wandering around the lagoon to see all the different seating areas and features. Our favorite was the waterfall. According to Lonely Planet, it was supposed to feel as though you were being “pummeled by a troll.” I’m not sure I got that feeling, but it was fun nonetheless.
The other fun thing to do at the Blue Lagoon is cover yourself and the special mud that is supposedly good for your skin. It’s also very entertaining. I will spare you the 1000 photos we took of ourselves covered in mud and just let you use your imagination.
The mud is not just hanging out around the Lagoon. It’s stored in wooden containers dotted around the spa with special metal scoops. You can get as much as you want to lather up your face. You are supposed to leave it on for 5-10 minutes while it hardens and then wash it off.
In a move of pure genius, the Blue Lagoon as a signature cocktail – which to my delight included champagne. As you can see it was bright blue and tasted delicious. Next up were our facial masks. Each bracelet gave us a portion large enough for two people, so we were able to get both the “volcano scrub” and the “aloe mask.” Once again, I will spare you the really attractive pictures of the experience.
After about two hours of relaxing, it was time to head out to the airport. I had been a little nervous about going from the blue lagoon to a plane for five hours, but with a little pre-planning everything went really well. Here are my tips for visiting the Blue Lagoon before your flight:
1. Make sure to bring a comfortable change of clothes and keep them dry in the provided lockers.
2. The Blue Lagoon provides body wash and conditioner, make sure to use plenty of conditioner before and after your visit and don’t put your hair in the water – it will ruin it.
3. Bring a hair brush, the Blue Lagoon provides hair dryers.
4. If you are worried about packing a wet bathing suit for your flight back, you can always rent one from the Blue Lagoon. The other option (which is what we did) is to bring an old suit you don’t mind throwing away after your visit.
5. It’s possible to take a bus directly from the Blue Lagoon to the airport, but if possible I recommend driving and dropping your car off at the airport.
That’s all! I highly recommend a visit if you are headed to Iceland anytime soon!_______________________________________________________________________________
