As a travel junkee, I’m always on the look out for cheap holidays, but the questions always comes down to, do I want to go back to a place I loved or do I want to try something new? In the past I’ve always opted for something new. However, Wandering Early just did a post about Why he won’t be visiting every country in the world because he has so many that he wants to go back to someday. It got me thinking about all the places I’ve visited too briefly, fallen in love with and want to go back to someday. And at the top of the list? Turkey
Why do I want to go back to Turkey?
Well, it’s starts with how I got there. I had a week off for Thanksgiving and some extra cash and pretty much at random my friend I found some cheap flights to Athens and Istanbul and that was that. With only a week and two cities, we had barely four days to spend in the former Constantinople. We barely saw the city and had no time for the rest of the country.
I missed a lot
Although we did manage to see the major historic sites, take a cruise down the Bosphorous, and visit the Egyptian Spice Market, we weren’t able to see many sites. For example, the Grand Bazaar was closed due to an Islamic Holiday. And that’s just in the city.
There is a ton to do in Turkey outside of Istanbul. I would have loved to see Ephesus, a famous archaeological site in the south. I also would like to see Western Turkey where you can take a balloon ride over the mountains. I’ve had many friends see the entire country and rave about its beauty. I can say I’ve been to Istanbul, and I have a passport stamp to prove it. But…
I haven’t really seen the country.
But, there is another reason I want to return to Turkey. I loved, LOVED Istanbul. It has got to be one of my favorite cities. (And not just because I had just come from Athens…burn). Istanbul is definitely one of those “East Meets West” type cities. Modern and Ancient all at once. I loved sitting on the Galatta Bridge and watching the skyline. Listen as the minarets called for prayer and the fisherman finished up their days. Watch the stylish young people head out to the clubs.
Overall, Istanbul is an amazing city and I’ve heard such great things about Turkey that I want to make sure the at return visit is in my future. If I go back, I will still spend some time in Istanbul but I will also try and visit the surrounding country side.
Next time I find a cheap holiday to Turkey I might just jump on it.
What about you? Where in the world do you want to go back?
